Apples have been regarded as the most mythical of all trees, from the beginning of time and adored as a symbol of immortality. The first cultivated varieties are believed to have been brought to Britain by the Romans. Benedictine monks later played an important part in developing apples, until each country and locality came to grow its own - creating an estimated 20,000 cultivated varieties. In some areas every village grew its unique variety, with a distinct flavour, shape, fragrance, colour succulence and crunchiness. Today, however, we typically find just a handful of varieties available in our shops and supermarkets, with a wealth of traditional apples being lost to cultivation.

Descending from ancient pagan traditions, the old fashioned apple harvest had strong links with autumn festivals, such as 'apple-bobbing' at Halloween, marking the end of summer.

Celebrated as a wonderful healing food, the flowers, fruit and peel of apples have long been valued for their health benefits: 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away!'.
