Get the groundwork right. Good preparation is the key to a successful job.

Ensure the ground is level and compacted.

All paving should be laid on firm foundations of sand or cement.

After mixing the cement ensure you work methodically taking your time. Layout components and set out accurate string lines if needed. A good mortar mix suitable for most garden projects is one part cement to five or six parts soft builders sand.

As work progresses frequent checks should be made on vertical and horizontal levels use a spirit level for this.

Slabs should be laid on a bed of mortar approx 25mm thick.

When pointing is required. Leave a gap of at least 2.5cm between each slab to allow a key for the pointing mix. Use a damp mortar mix of 1 part cement to 4 parts building sand.
