As any plants that you use in your containers will hopefully create a good display for some months it is worth taking some time to get the basics right.
-
Before planting your terracotta pot it should be soaked in water to reduce the amount of water being removed from the compost when you plant it.
-
Place adequate drainage in the bottom of the pot before filling with compost. This can be broken crockery, gravel or broken polystyrene.
-
Use good quality multi purpose compost or a special container and basket compost. We have a good selection and our plant area staff will be happy to advise you.
-
Remove the plant from its original container taking care not to damage the root system. Position centrally and backfill with more compost firming the plant in place.
-
You should aim to have the plant planted at the same level as it was in its original container. It is also recommended to leave a gap below the rim to assist in watering.
-
Lift the container off the ground to assist in drainage and improve frost resistance. We have a wide selection of pot feet and pot stands available.
-
Water the plant in. Check regularly particularly during the summer months.
