Window of Opportunity

Stunning displays have not gone out the window at Thetford Garden Centre as we scoop second prize in the annual Emma Bridgewater ‘Best Christmas Window Display’.

The competition, organised by the Emma Bridgewater pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, is in it’s second year and is open to all of the 200 plus Emma Bridgewater stockists across the UK. The display team, headed by Gift Department Manager Amanda Levett, created the display in the centre’s Christmas Department and featured a jolly Santa in an Emma Bridgewater pinny along with his cocoa. “We are delighted to have achieved second place in the competition, especially as it is our first year of entering and we are up against huge chain stores too. We went for humour and something a bit different and it paid off. We have been stocking the pottery for nearly two years and it is very popular, we have been steadily growing the range and it was great to create a fun display with it.”

Protect your rabbit against Viral Haemorrhagic Disease  (VHD, or HVD)

Sadly we have to inform you that Eastgate Vets has recently diagnosed a fatal viral disease in a local rabbit (Mildenhall area). So far there have been three cases that they are aware of, all of which have died. The disease is called “Viral Haemorrhagic Disease” (VHD, or HVD) and it can kill rabbits in a day or two. It can be spread by contact with other rabbits or by things that infected urine or faces have been in contact with. This Includes insects, birds, feet, clothing or even hay grown on a field in which infected wild rabbits have been grazing. You could potentially bring it home on your shoes after walking where wild rabbits have been.

This is the first outbreak of this disease that Eastgate Vets are aware of in this region in the last decade, so many rabbits are unprotected and owners unaware. There is however a vaccine against VHD and they recommend all rabbit owners vaccinate their rabbits against this horrific disease as soon as possible. Please inform any other rabbit owners you may know.

If you would like further information about VHD please visit any of the links below or alternatively you can contact the RWF (Rabbit Welfare Fund) National Helpline on 0844 3246090.

Conker Tree Science: Leaf Watch
Help the Universities of Bristol and Hull track the spread of the horse-chestnut leaf miner moth.

What is happening to Britain’s horse-chestnut trees? Since 2002 Britain’s conker trees have been under attack from a non-native moth - and now you can help scientists at the Universities of Bristol and Hull monitor what’s happening. The Conker Tree Science: Leaf Watch app Shows you how to identify affected trees and enables you to submit your geo-located leaf photos. This data will show the scientists where the moth is present within the UK today. Your reports will contribute to the Conker Tree Science research project. For more information on the app please visit: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/conker-tree-science-leaf-watch/id445371129?mt=8 or alternatively visit their website at: www.ourweboflife.org.uk
